Grigory Andreevich Savin was the founder of the Tannery. His sons Andrey and Kondraty followed their father's footsteps and also became successful tanners. As the Tannery grew, more and more Ostashkov residents were becoming part of the successful business. Today the Tannery is employing grand-grand children of those who had joined the Tannery team hundred years ago
Leather tanning and processing worhshop on the shores of Lake Seliger near the village of Ostashkov was officially founded in 1730 by a local resident Grigory Andreevich Savin. His sons, Andrey and Kondraty, followed their father's footsteps, also becoming successful tanners
In 1811, on the eve of the Napoleonic campaign against Russia, the Tannery owner at the time Mr Kondraty Alekseevich Savin received an order and delivered a large number of leather to St. Petersburg. He also sent to the capital 60 experienced leather craftsmen to make boots for the Russian army
Savin was granted the title of nobility for his services in equipping the Russian army with boots during the Patriotic War of 1812. As a sign of special goodwill, Emperor Alexander I personally visited Ostashkov city
In 1825 K.A.Savin built his own vessels to export the leathers produced by the Tannery overseas. The goods were exported to the countries of Western Europe, as well as New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Chile, Turkey, Syria, Egypt
The Tannery was granted with a Russian State Two-Headed Eagle mark
Following the death of Fedor Kondratyevich, the Tannery was taken over by his nephew Vladimir Ivanovich Savin, who has involved the third-party investors for registering the "Partnership of Russian Tannery “Vladimir Savin in Ostashkov”.
The management of the new partnership, located in St. Petersburg, carried out a significant reconstruction of the Tannery. During the course of reconstruction new buildings were erected, old steam boilers were replaced, a 100-horsepower steam engine was purchased, state-of-the-art leather finishing machines were ordered from abroad, and a powerful wastewater filter was installed. A gas station was built to illuminate most parts of the workshops
In 1901, the Tannery’s products were awarded with the highest prize at an exhibition in Glasgow
In January 1919, the Tannery was nationalized. The temporary management of the Tannery was entrusted to the former owner, S. M. Savin, under the control of the local party committee and the trade union organization
In 1934 the Tannery won a contract for the production of car seat upholstery at the first line of the Moscow tube
In 1955 the first continuous production line was launched at the Tannery
A process of installing of the automation system at the Tannery was started. First station for the regeneration of chrome effluents was built
In 1975 the Tannery’s products were awarded with USSR Quality Mark
The Tannery was awarded with the prestigious Order of Red Banner of Labor
The general reconstruction of the Tannery was completed with the help of Yugoslavian specialists
November 17, 2014 the Tannery obtained its new name – "Volga Tannery". The new owners and the management team worked hard to modernise main production facilities. The Tannery installed state-of-the-art equipment and optimized its internal infrastructure.
In December 2014, we launched a new and unique production line of food grade bovine protein (collagen). The line allows to diversify production facilities and use raw materials more efficiently by using most of their valuable components. It is the first production site of that kind and scale in Russia
Volga Tannery is included in the list of the strategic enterprises in the Russian Federation - the fact that confirms the status of the Tannery as an important and valuable player in the economy of the Russian Federation
In 2018 JSC “Volta Tannery” was gold-rated by the International Society of Leatherworkers LWG (Leather Working Group) following an audit. Gold award confirms that the Tannery production process complies with the highest international standards
Based on the results of the meeting of the Government Committee on economic development of March 20, 2020 the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia included JSC “Volga Tannery” in the list of strategically important enterprises for the Russian economy
Volga Tannery has become the first Tannery in Russia to achieve the Best in Class “A” Grade for its Environmental Sustainability Performance as a result of the latest Inditex Group’s “Sustainable Manufacturing for green to wear products” audit.
Best in Class“A” means that the Tannery fully complies with Inditex’s most stringent “Clear to Wear and Safe to Wear” requirements and makes the Tannery one of the important leather suppliers for companies that produce shoes and leather garments for Inditex.

Volga Tannery has become the first Tannery in Russia to achieve the standard in accordance with the SLF Standards in three modules – Governance Responsibility, Social Responsibility and Environmental Responsibility based on the results of the audit.
The result obtained confirms that the production process at our Tannery fully complies with international standards and norms.
